What to Look for in Budgeting Apps

When choosing a budgeting app, there are several key features to consider. These features can significantly impact how effective and enjoyable your budgeting experience will be. Below are the essential aspects to keep in mind when evaluating the right budgeting app for your needs.

  • Secure Bank connection

The best budgeting apps use Open Banking to securely connect to your bank, providing read-only access to your transaction data. This ensures your funds cannot be moved or altered. Look for apps that comply with Australian Open Banking standards, use strong encryption, and allow you to disable the connection anytime for full control and peace of mind. This is why I like using Billroo instead of a spreadsheet.

  • Custom Categories

Custom categories let you personalise your budget to suit your financial goals and lifestyle. Instead of sticking to generic options, you can create specific categories like “Pet Care” or “Weekend Getaways.” This flexibility ensures your budget is meaningful and aligned with your priorities, helping you track spending more effectively.

  • Auto-Categorisation Accuracy

A good budgeting app automatically categorises transactions to save time, but accuracy is key. Apps with strong AI, like Billroo, ensure transactions are sorted correctly while offering manual overrides if needed. Accurate categorisation provides clearer insights into your spending and eliminates the hassle of constant corrections.

  • Location (ideally in Australia)

For Australians, choosing a local app like Billroo or Frollo ensures seamless integration with Australian banks, support for local currencies, and compliance with privacy laws. These apps cater to Australian spending habits and banking systems, making them more reliable and user-friendly than international alternatives.

Best Budgeting Apps for Australians in 2025

We’ll go through 5 budgeting apps 1 at a time and then I’ll be comparing each of them side by side in a table so you can decide which one is right for you.

Billroo – My Personal Favourite

Of course, I have to start with Billroo! It’s not a budgeting app but you can use it on Desktop and mobile I co-created with my partner Pablo because we couldn’t find one that did everything we wanted. All our team is based in Australia as well 🙂 With Billroo, you can create your own budget categories, connect to your bank or upload transactions. While most app ask you to put your password to your bank we decided to use open banking with Fiskil so you don’t have do put your password. Once your transactions are in we also have integrated AI we can auto -categorise, but there is always a way to overwrite the categories manually which is something I couldn’t do with other apps. You can also very easily create your budget in there, we wanted to keep the style of the spreadsheet where it’s easy to create and delete but with the power of an application. Then the insights is really cool, after using it only for a couple of month we were able to see that we invested almost 40% of our income which is so good. We’ve also integrated AI so that we have really good auto-categorisation but you always have a way to edit it if you need to. Plus, we’re always working on adding new features based on your feedback. The pro version is $5.49/m or $50/y

Frollo – Best for Automatic Tracking

Frollo is an Australian-made app that connects seamlessly with your bank accounts. It takes care of tracking your spending automatically, helps you set savings goals, and even sends bill reminders But one downside is the lack of customisation. For example you can’t create your own categories, which means tailoring the app to fit your specific budget isn’t an option. Also, when setting up your budget, you’ll need to add categories one at a time, which can feel a bit tedious. So, if you’re looking for a free app that provides deep financial insights, automates much of the hard work, Frollo remains a solid choice. It might take some time to get used to its quirks, but for many users, the benefits far outweigh the downsides.

WeMoney

WeMoney is a feature-rich app designed to provide a holistic view of your financial health. It allows you to link multiple bank accounts, credit cards, and loans from different institutions, giving you a consolidated picture of your finances. The app includes great features like credit score tracking, and recurring transaction calendars. However, WeMoney does come with its limitations:

Custom Categories and Desktop Access: Customisation options, like creating your own categories or using a desktop version of the app, are only available with the Pro plan, which costs $9.99/month or $98.99/year.and on Desktop you can only see your transactions, you won’t be able to see the whole App features.

Auto-Categorisation Accuracy: The app’s auto-categorisation feature occasionally misclassifies transactions. For example, some users reported that credit card transfers were categorised as income, which can skew budget calculations. And you can’t change the categories if it’s incorrect.

Heavy Advertising for Financial Products: WeMoney places a significant emphasis on promoting financial products, particularly loans and mortgages. Upon signing up, users are often directed to Lendi, a partnered mortgage broker, with claims of saving money on home loans.

YNAB (You Need a Budget) – Best for Detailed Planning

YNAB – A Proactive Approach to Budgeting

YNAB, or You Need a Budget, is designed for people who want to follow the zero-based budgeting approach.

By the way if you want to learn more about the budgeting method you can check this article I have made.

YNAB helps you plan ahead, manage your cash flow, and stay prepared for both expected and unexpected expenses.

Key Features That Stand Out

  1. Proactive Budgeting: YNAB encourages you to only budget with money you already have, not with anticipated future income.
  2. Goal-Oriented Categories: You can set targets for everything from saving for a vacation to paying down debt, and YNAB helps you track your progress in real-time.
  3. Adaptability: Overspent on groceries? YNAB’s system lets you reallocate funds from other categories, ensuring you stay on track without derailing your entire budget.

YNAB for Australian Users

While YNAB is a powerful tool, Australian users may face a hurdle: the app doesn’t support direct bank linking for Australian accounts.

You’ll need to import your transactions manually, which adds an extra step to the process

The Cost

At $14.99/month or $99/year, YNAB is more expensive than many other budgeting apps. But YNAB offers a 34-day free trial for new users.

Buddy

Buddy is a great app, very clean, stylish interface and don’t mind a bit of manual work, Buddy is an excellent choice. It’s a minimalist app that requires you to input all your transactions manually since it doesn’t sync with your bank account. It’s great for people who prefer to be hands-on with their budgeting. Buddy costs $72.99 per year, but you can try it for free with their 7-day trial.”
